It’s coastal bathroom makeover reveal day!! Yippee!!

Can you believe it??

Probably more than I can. lol Because I’ve been living it over here. ;)
Actually, for 15+ years…ack! How I have no idea.
But as it sometimes goes, we end up doing the things that people see first. Somehow this little coastal bathroom makeover got pushed to last over and over (and over) again, well, because we were the only ones who ever saw it. And because we had another bathroom we could use down the hall.

We even started it back in 2017 (well, we actually sort of started it before that, years before…but like I mentioned…it got sidelined). But other projects jumped in front of it again. At that time, the coastal farmhouse laundry took over.
Next came the full kitchen remodel. New flooring and so on.

But we finally wrapped our way back around to the bathroom makeover. Looking over these pictures to do this post was daunting…and liberating all at the same time.
We are FREE!!
This was the last of the major remodels we had to do in this house. Everything else that we have left to do are small, fairly simple things.
I can NOT tell you how happy that makes me.

That’s why it feels like such a treat to have it finished…finally. Such a sweet treat it is. I feel so spoiled!! haha Such a simple little (tiny) bathroom and I truly feel pampered. Considering how it started it’s no wonder, but still.

And the closet makeover has a bit to do with that as well. We have hardware to place and I have a little something else I need to finish before I reveal that but it’s basically done too.

I also have some exciting news about that too. Well, it’s exciting for me! haha The closet is MINE! All mine. :)
My sweet hubby liked my awesome plan of this closet being mine, and us building him a built-in closet unit in our bedroom. We measured and also looked at and measured his clothes hanging in the other room (our makeshift closet during this time) before we decided fully to make sure he’d have plenty of room. We’ve already started on his, you might have seen a snippet or two over on Instagram stories.

But that’s for another post, I’ll tell you all about that when I share the master closet makeover.

Today it’s all about our coastal bathroom makeover!

Coastal Bathroom Makeover Reveal

I’ll be sharing a few “before” photos and “during remodel”  photos today but if you want to see more “before” photos, or installing tile, etc., pop on over >>> to this post first before you continue reading here.

Here’s an oldie. Way back when we first started this makeover. And thought we’d finish it at the time. ha!

Good intentions anyway.

Baby steps…

I should mention that my “before” pictures are really “during” since I never ended up taking any of this bathroom. But it was interesting.
Lavender painted cabinet and window, gold countertop, big colorful floral wallpaper, original light fixture (very ornate 70’s-you can see a little bit of it in the first picture above) and very gold tile.

It lived mid-construction for years. Ugh (so embarrassing but it is what it is…and this was real life right here)

Inside the shower, tiles coming down. Yay!

We only ended up taking a handful of showers in this bathroom because we found out soon after we moved in that there was a leak.
The leak ended up on the ceiling of the kitchen. Which when we noticed it leaking, we realized it had been leaking before we moved in and had been painted over I’m assuming by the previous homeowners. We weren’t real happy about that but what are you gonna do?
So we stopped using that bathroom and started sharing our kid’s hall bath with them. (we thought temporarily…ha!!

For years.  As you already know. ;)

I absolutely hated taking a shower in there so that was fine by me. It was so creepy and dark and cave-like.
Yuck.

So one thing we knew we were doing was taking that wall OUT and raising that lowered ceiling inside the shower UP HIGH.

Buh bye!!

Good riddance!

There’s the old stamped ceiling. We also removed that and replaced it with nice, smooth drywall….and a new light over the shower.

My husband and I did the entire remodel except for the plumbing and electrical.
Hubby did the tear out (a lot of work), the drywall, built the shower and installed the faux shiplap.
I painted, caulked and did all of the tilework myself…whew…that was a job. Not gonna lie about it! lol But it was do-able.
I might have cursed a time or two though. ;)

Oh, he also replaced the old, lavender window with a pretty new one.

The first new window in our house. We’ve since put in 7 more and have 13 more to go. SO excited about that too because there were quite a few windows we’ve never been able to open since moving in. Terrible!

We had to build the “seat” on this side. Not the best location but we couldn’t really put it on the other side.
I’m so happy to have it for shampoo to sit, etc.

We ordered the two slab pieces from the shower department at Lowes. I was so, so happy with how well they matched the tile.

Baby hexagon tile for the shower floor.

The new, nice smooth ceiling…and light…and fan. Can you believe none of our bathrooms had fans??

A close up of that pretty green/blue glass tile I loved so much. (I’ll have all the source links at the bottom of this post)

Since it is a small bathroom, we really were thoughtful about making it as functional as possible. Like not putting a toilet tissue roll holder on any of the walls that would “stick out” in the space. Instead, we opted to use that bit of corner space with a toilet paper roll holder that not only held the roll you are using but stored more for later.

And also adding these bath towel hooks on the small wall space to the right.

Not really space for a wastebasket so I found this narrow one that fits perfectly (and out of the way) beside the toilet.

I found this simple shelf and sprayed the black metal towel holder with brushed nickel to go better with the rest of the metals in the bathroom.

It’s decorative but also is more for purpose than looks. It holds things we use a lot.

The bath cabinet is from IKEA and I just love it. We knew we wanted something with drawers and this one is perfect.

I didn’t love the hardware that came on it so I changed it to these. (there were originally 4 flat black knobs)

Inside the drawers are large and hold a bunch.

The mirror? I looked and looked and finally found this one for $60 on Amazon. The last one they had but I’ll link it at the bottom anyway because you could maybe search it and find it elsewhere.

I thought it went perfectly with our coastal theme and I loved the muted, brushed gold color.

I thought this light fixture would also go perfectly with our coastal style.

A simple one-knob faucet, less fussy, for our small bathroom.

Our rug, which I just love. (I used the same one, bigger, in the closet)

And simply roll it up and put it back under the cabinet when not in use. (gotta use all the space in a small bathroom)

We are planning to put a barn door to the bathroom and to the closet, from the master bedroom. We have to build those so I will be revealing those at a later date.

I know this is not a big, fancy bathroom makeover but it’s the most amazing thing in the world to us! We are thrilled with it and so happy to finally have this space DONE. It might have taken 15 years but it was so worth it.

I’ll be sharing my closet as soon as I can get those last few things done so be on the lookout for it. AND we will be sharing my husband’s closet/built-in we are in the process of building now. Keep an eye out over on Instagram stories because we also share over there what we are doing. You can follow along on this build there until I post it here when it’s done.

Want to see more of our full room remodels??

And a few full room makeovers…

  1. Y’all did such a great job! I really love the look of the mirror.
I look forward to seeing the “how to” on the barn doors!

    1. Thanks, BJ!! We can’t wait to get those done…but will have to with all that’s going on. But soon, I hope! :) xo

  2. Your bathroom looks amazing, Nancy! You guys did such a great job on this space. I love your idea for changing out the hardware on the Ikea vanity. I used a similar Ikea vanity in our lake house basement and the only thing I’m not thrilled about is the black knobs on it. After seeing your vanity hardware, I just may change mine out. You did such a good job on the tiling. It’s so pretty and I know that you are thrilled with the end result.

    1. Thank you, Paula! Oh yes, change that stuff!! What a difference it made in the way it looked. Plus, I love being able to just have the one pull instead of 4 knobs to have to handle. We are so very happy it’s finally done. It was a long time coming. :) xoxo

  3. Oh Nancy, this was worth the wait! You did a stellar job with the finishes, maximizing the space and decorating this bathroom. Way to go, it is gorgeous!!! I adore the one photo where the mirror barely reflects in the shower glass. :)

    1. I missed this comment somehow! Thank you so much Christina! We are so happy to have it done finally. :) And yes, that is a neat shot!! Hope you are doing well! xoxo

  4. It looks amazing!!! I know you are just thrilled with it. Ya’ll did a phenominal job!! Yay…another project done! Can’t wait to see the closet!! XOXO

  5. Great job! I have a question, what are you doing about privacy at the window? All of my bathrooms have windows in them & I love all the natural light & the ability to have fresh air, etc(we are in the process of building) but I am having a tough time deciding on window treatments. Thank you, Carol

    1. Thanks, Carol! Oh, right now we just have one of those paper temporary shades. I haven’t decided fully but am looking at several things since we are replacing all of our windows and our old blinds will not work in them. I know I don’t want regular blinds (the slatted kind) or plantation shutter style. I like having it up and out of the way during the day to let all the light in. So definitely something those goes up and down fully. I’m sure I’ll post about it on the blog when I figure it out! :) xo

  6. I am so grateful to not be alone in my master bathroom mess. Still using it, but started ripping wallpaper about 10 years ago. It’s quite a mess. Tile has been stacked in the bedroom for just as long. This was going to be our first project. All the others were much more fun, so this keeps getting pushed back. You’re right. No one else sees it, so it gets low priority. I am craving my bedroom retreat space so much. There is hope! Thanks for sharing the whole picture. Enjoy your much deserved new space. xo

    1. Oh my, you sound like us!! I know that well. ;) It was definitely a low priority but honestly should’ve been much higher as it didn’t make me feel all that good to have it looking so bad for so long. I’m sure you get that too! The main closet is basically done but we are now in the midst of building out my husband’s closet on the far end of our bedroom. Then we will be painting our bedroom walls, maybe adding a fun treatment on one and replacing the flooring. THEN we will finally have our retreat too!! We’ve painted and done the flooring in our room years ago, so that part is a re-do since we’ve been here so long. And yes, there is definitely hope!! Getting your bathroom done will be all the more sweeter because of it! xoxo

  7. Very clean and classic…love the shower floor tile! Love the old mirror too though..that would be pretty painted with white or a fun color…vintage style! Beautiful look!
    Have a great day!
    Lesley xo

    1. Thank you, Lesley! Yes, definitely vintage style. I think we saved it…because we save everything for me to makeover! If we did, I’ll share it on the blog. Hope you are staying safe and well! xoxo

  8. Wow! Opening this post was the best way to start my day! You did such an amazing job. I know you must love walking in there just to look at it :) It’s so beautiful.

    1. Aw, thanks so much, Kimberly! Yes, absolutely!! It was such a long time coming, and we lived with the old, half torn apart so long, that it honestly feels surreal! xoxo

  9. I like your toilet paper holder better than the one that is linked. I need one!! Where did you get the one you have in your picture, (please!). :)

Great transformation, too, by the way! What a difference with the shower!! Fabulous!!!

    1. Aw, yes!! I bought it before Christmas…TJ Maxx or At Home, I can’t remember but it was one of those two. I actually bought one and then found another (this one) that I liked better and returned the other. I know for sure it was one of those two stores. My memory is telling me the final one came from At Home. I tried to find something similar on Amazon but that was as close as I could find. And thank you!! :) xo

  10. I can’t imagine what it was like living with the ongoing construction. However, it is so lovely and you worked a miracle taking advantage of every inch of space! Love the sink faucet! Congratulations on a fabulous job! Stay healthy and safe!

    1. Oh, it’s no fun!! lol But we’ve been living in ongoing construction since we moved in so I think we got used to it…sort of! It was quite the task we took on when we bought this house. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to just do a complete renovation at the time of move-in. It had to be done over the years but who knew it would be this many, we sure didn’t! ;) And thank you, Cecilia! You stay safe too!xoxo

    1. Thank you, Suzi! SO glad it’s finally done. It’s been a long time coming, for sure! And yes, I can’t wait for you to see it too…and to even be able to come over here! :) xo

  11. Want to share our bathroom make-over. We are ranchers in a very rural area of Montana & live in the house(log) that my husband’s father built before he was born. The bathroom was very old & in much need of remodeling so here it is. My husband can do anything he sets his mind to. The blue pine used for the walls & barn door came off the place. My husband also created the sink vanity from blue pine. We went with the corrugated tin for durability & a western theme. We also added a new bathroom onto our bedroom & maybe I can show that later. It’s huge. Not sure how to send pictures. I think you will like them if I can figure how to send them.

    1. Hi Diane! Sounds great!! You can send the photos to my email address if you like. :) nancy at artsychicksrule dot com.

    1. Thank you, Lizzy. We are so happy it is finally done after all of these years! Have a safe and happy weekend! xo

  12. I love your redo! Seeing your gold tile and the lowered ceiling in the shower reminded me of our bathroom before we had it renovated. We had neutral tan/gray tile installed with mosaic tile accents and raised the shower ceiling and added a light/fan combo. Such a big difference. I know you will enjoy your new bath. I can’t wait to see your closet redo as well!

    1. Thanks, Sherry! Oh yes, sounds very similar! We hope to be sharing the closet in the new few weeks! :) xoxo

  13. Nancy, it’s just GORGEOUS! Simple but with just the right amount of shiny, pretty! I love the alabaster listello tile in the shower (the decorative stripe – I think it’s called a listello??) So pretty. Another job really well done!

    1. Thank you, Carolyn! Oh, I don’t know?? I hadn’t heard that but I just looked it up and yes, it is! :) xoxo

  14. Nancy, beautiful… just beautiful! I love it all! I cannot believe you and Wally did all that by yourselves. Super nice job! xo

    1. Thank you, Karen! Yes, I can’t either!! haha Or even the rest of the house. It amazes me to think…but we did! And if we can, anybody can!! Thanks again!! :) xoxo

  15. Sooo very pretty! Clean lines, simple and gorgeous!! I love, love that gold mirror; looks very nautical to me and just adds that WOW factor! Can you guess that I really love what you’ve done in there? It might be a small room, but it certainly gives the illusion of “bigness” with all the light, glass shower doors and… well, it’s a perfect job well done!!

    1. Thank you so much, Karolyn! I’m so happy to hear it gives the illusion of bigness, that is what I was hoping for! I wanted to make sure we could make it as light and bright (and open) as possible since it was not a big space to work with. Thanks again! :) xoxo

  16. Looks beautiful! We have a fairly small bathroom that’s on our renovation list in our 1956 rancher.. I’d actually like to “borrow” a bit of the space to add to our kitchen but it will make the bathroom very small, with the fixtures all on one wall, similar to what you have done. Would you mind sharing the dimensions of your room? Thanks!

    1. Thank you, Jaymie! I don’t mind at all…it’s small! ;) 8 x 5 feet, that is it. But it really does feel so much larger since we’ve redone. It’s amazing really. We were originally going to make it bigger (taking from the closet) but decided not to. I’m SO glad we didn’t! xo

  17. You and your husband did an amazing job on your bathroom. Doesn’t it feel wonderful now that it is all fresh and new? It is even more special because you did it yourself. I’m glad you didn’t take away the closet space. Who doesn’t need more closet space?

    1. Thank you, Marian! Yes, so much!! And yes, you’ve got that right…and exactly why we didn’t take that space away! Always, always, always need more closet space, so happy!! :) xoxo

  18. Wow, Love this makeover. What an amazing job you and your husband did on the makeover!
I love what you did to the shower. We Currently have tub and was thinking of putting a shower in instead. Where did you get the shower doors from.? Also did you have a detail budget that you used? What type of toilet did you use? Looking forward to maybe doing ours too.

    1. Thank you so much, Susie! :) The shower doors came locally from a glass company. And no, we didn’t really have a detailed budget but it was definitely still done budget-friendly. We didn’t splurge on tile, cabinet, mirror, lighting or anything. The glass door was the priciest of it all. Here is the toilet we used. Good luck on yours…you can definitely do it budget-friendly! :) xo

  19. Bee-u’-tiful! :) What color are the cabinet drawers (under the sink)? Did i read that you found the cabinet at Ikea? Is this chalk paint…if so will chalk paint work well on a builder grade bathroom cabinet (oak doors – with mdf (or engineered wood[?] under something that resembles contact paper peeling up on one bottom side edge down by the floor that must’ve gotten wet?) Thank you for any help in advance. Fairly new to refinishing furniture, but highly encouraged to forge ahead as i found your tips before refinishing a chair, a 3 drawer chest and a small cabinet that became a coffee bar. Hoping to get best/most appropriate paint on the bathroom cabinets for an updated look and add new counter/sinks to the cabinets after repainting.

    1. Thank you, Greta! They are gray and came in that color. I didn’t end painting it. And yep, IKEA. And yes, you can paint oak doors with chalk paint. I would glue or seal that peeling part and sand to entire finish to rough it up a bit before painting though. I wouldn’t use wax for a topcoat though….go with a poly for better protection in the bathroom. Check out Sherwin Williams Emerald Urathane for the cabinets too…just another option for you. Good luck and have fun! xoxo

  20. Thank you! Went with SW “Pussywillow.” Can’t wait to see finished effect! I appreciate your hints and will do :P

  21. Hi Nancy, I love the look of your master bathroom!

I’m in the process of planning our master bathroom remodel.
We don’t have a shower. In its place is a linen closet, which I want to remove.
What size is the shower and sink cabinet? Your bathroom looks very similar to how we have ours.
I also love the closet! I might have my fiancé do this for me as well.

    1. Thank you, Bella!

The vanity is from IKEA and is 32 inches.
      The shower 36×60.
Yes, do!! I really love my closet! :) Good luck with your remodel! xo
