Oh, baskets, why do I love you so?!

Ha! Okay but really, I have a little bit of a problem with baskets. I want them all.
And pillows and throws.
I’m not sure what it is about those items but I can never get enough.

Are you the same way??

And I know you’ve seen about five thousand basket makeovers here on my blog, but I’ve got another one for you today.
I like to cover all the bases. lol

I’ve painted, dry brushed, gel stained, water-based stained, and now …

Another ho-hum orangey thrift store find for $4.

Okay, but before we get into this project I want to wish a big congrats to Michelle on winning my latest giveaway!
For those that didn’t win, don’t worry, I am already planning my next one for February! :)

When I used the gel-based stain on my basket makeovers I would have to spray it with poly afterward to seal it. I thought it might be fun to see how this all-in-one (stain plus poly in one product-Minwax Polyshades) would do.

Not only that, this basket had a really shiny, non-porous finish and I didn’t really think the gel stain would adhere as nicely as I wanted.
The Polyshades is really made to “lay on top”, so I thought it would be perfect.

See the shine?

I pulled out my “Espresso” Minwax Polyshades and a rag to apply.
You can see where I’ve applied it to the left side of the bottom of the basket.

You might notice that I cannot get into all the crevices and grooves this way but that’s okay.
Most baskets have varying shades in them so I thought I’d let it roll.
Plus, I like the dimension the varying shades give the basket.

The front with Polyshades, the back without.

Inside half done (left) and half still not done. (right)

I love how rich it made this basket look.
I applied it and let it dry for a couple of hours and then came back and went over most of it again to darken a bit more.

SO much better.

This basket is very well made and solid.
It’s a keeper for sure, and I’m keeping it. ;)

I love that when using Polyshades, I’m done when I’m done. No sealer/topcoat needed.

  2. Wow- that basket in full retail would cost a bundle. Well done, Nancy – and it looks right at home on your fabulous coffee table holding your magazines! (Always so nice to corral those!)

So – this Michelle person you mention winning your giveaway…….just checking on the spelling
and making sure it is Michelle and not me, Michele, because I really loved that tray! ♥♥♥

A gal’s gotta ask to be absolutely certain, right? Haha.

    1. Thanks, Michele!! And aw, haha, no, I’m sorry, not this time! :) But I’ve got a really fun giveaway planned for February, stay tuned!! xoxo

  3. Thanks for the giveaway Nancy and congratulations Michelle!!
I meant to tell you in your last post how much I enjoy seeing Ryder. :) What a gorgeous boy he is!
I didn’t even know polyshades existed! And what a great job of bringing out all the different details of the basket! Positively marvelous!
    Create on!!

    1. Aw, thanks so much! He is definitely a sweetheart and my best buddy every day! And oh wow, really?! Polyshades is great for certain projects, not all, but for some for sure! xo

  4. Hi Nancy, I’m new to your blog and have saved some of your projects for inspiration when I get to go into my attic before my yard sale! Now since quarantine I’ve been re-organizing and decorating my home then I’ll be able to see what project I can do. Thanks so glad I stumbled on your blog looking forward to future “gems”.😉

    1. Hi Kathleen and welcome! So very happy to have you here! And yes, absolutely! I’ve been doing the exact same thing lately, lots of organizing going on around here. :) xo

      1. Thank you for replying. Found some items in my attic that could be a “find” keep you posted😉

    2. Yep a basket hoarder here!!!! Love the way you finish your baskets and how u decorate them. I also think your Sea Scene picture is so lovely and serene. 😍

  5. I have a wicker chair I purchased from Pier 1 many years ago and the stain has worn off in places. Would this same technique and product work on the wicker chair? Looks like the color you used would match my chair. I assume the stain would not come off on clothes when sitting in the chair. Thanks!

    1. Yes, absolutely! I think this might be the perfect choice for something like that. You can take a small paint brush (like a small artist’s brush) and apply very sparingly only just where needed. And I’d bet you won’t even be able to tell. :) xo (oh, and no, it will not come off at all…it’s a stain and poly/sealer in one, so once it’s dried/cured, it is good to go!)

  6. It amazing what color can do to baskets. This one looks like an antique and I love the shade you used. It is so much prettier and can be used anywhere. I don’t blame you for keeping it! Thanks for this makeover. Plenty of inspiration in this post and so many others that you have shared!

    1. I think so too, Sue! And yes, this is such a sturdy, well-made basket I had to keep this one! :) Thank you, Sue! xoxo

  7. Baskets, pillows and throws, oh my!
Yes, I definitely suffer the same affliction.
I love this idea. I am going to try it on one of the many many baskets I own. Thank you!

  8. Love this makeover! I have some things that need makeovers and I think Polyshades might be my answer. Applying poly after staining isn’t my favorite! You aren’t alone in your love of baskets, throws, and pillows! I have a hard time resisting those things as well, along with trays, mirrors, and picture frames! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Yes! It’s not a “one all, be all” answer but it is perfect for the right project! And haha, I forgot those…yes those too! It’s tough, isn’t it! lol xoxo

  9. I never heard of that product. I love how rich the basket looks now. I have several baskets I wasn’t sure what to do with. I’ve painted a couple including Longaberger baskets lol. I have a few rattan type ones like yours that I must try this on.

    1. Oh yes, it’s a great product for the right project. I have a bunch of old Longaberger baskets I need to do something with. I have only painted one or two because…well, Longaberger! But I need to do something with the rest. Either sell or make them to my liking and take them out of storage to use and love, right?! xo

      1. Yes lol. I bought too many. Not sure what to do with them all lol. I should try to sell some also but will never get what I paid so more tempted to change them up a bit.

  10. The basket looks great! and brand new! I like the idea that the poly is built in. Will look at some of my older baskets and perhaps will find a few to make over. Thanks for the inspiration.
