Water based stain is so simple to use. It’s a no brainer for things like this old, orangey basket makeover for spring.

Oh my gosh, am I ready?! So ready. I’d bet you are too.
I hadn’t planned to turn this basket makeover into a spring thing but I just couldn’t help myself. ;)
Especially since the color of the water based stain I used for this project ended up being more green than I thought it’d be.
I was going for a gray/weathered tone but got more green instead.
If you remember, I mentioned this stain in this post here because I actually bought it to use on the top of that coffee table.
But it was too green! lol
So, I went in another direction with that project. As you know, it took me several tries before I got it right. (if you missed that post, click the link above and check it out)

Today’s project is another thrifty find from my recent haul that I’m sharing today.

I found that wreath at At Home last year.
The flowers in the basket are from Trader Joe’s, aren’t those roses adorable???
And the framed spring printable can be found >>> here. I created that a couple of years ago.
You can use the basket for anything really.
Pillows/blankets, etc.
Or flowers. I like it with flowers. :)
That water based stain definitely gives it a brand new look.
Do you know how many of these old orange-y baskets you can find at the thrift store? Lots!
And so many color options with these stains make it a fun project. No worries of messing with stinky oil based stuff.
I love that they have come out with so many more water based options.

I am sort of loving this green/gray color so keep an eye out. I’m thinking you might see it on a furniture makeover at some point in the future.

I love this new color on the basket! Even though you’re using it for Spring (it can’t come soon enough here in snowy Wyoming!), I can see it with orange tones in Fall and reds in Winter. Good job and I envy you being close to a TJs!!!
Thanks, Denise!! :) Not much prep on this one! I just wiped it down and applied it since it was a bit roughed up already. But overall, you want to start with a clean surface and one that is ready to accept the stain, meaning, it needs to be more of an unfinished finish, not shiny intact poly-coated piece, etc.

Thank you, Lisa! It was fun trying out something new! Hmm, I don’t really have a way to do that BUT you can search my site (in the search box put the term “giveaway”) and they will all come up. Then you can look in each post at the Rafflecopter box to see who won each of the contests. It will usually give a first name and last initial (if the person entering provided a last name, etc). This last winner was Lisa B. She provided her last name to me when I emailed her notifying she won but not to the Rafflecopter so it only put “Lisa” there. Keep entering!! I’ve got one of those same aging baskets, with a lid. It was the card holder at our wedding a million years ago, so gotta hang on to it, but it sure needs an update like this.
I have three baskets just like that one that I’ve left orangey-original because I didn’t want to chalky paint them. But this idea is fantastic. Gray is the way to go. I’ll do it … right after the ___ (fill in the blank with a number) projects ahead of it. But, soon!
This is a great idea for them! Unlike the chalk type paints, it will leave the grain somewhat visible which is really nice. And there are many colors to choose from too! And, oh my, yes to that!!! Endless projects and to-do lists! lol xoxo

Looks great! I have been looking for ways to update my old longaberger baskets that are still in great shape but no longer fit my decor. I have come up with an easy technique for a Frenchy graywash that I think I will try out on a few of them and I definitely want to try a water based stain after seeing yours.
Hi Jan, I think an old bristle brush works well if the dust is loose. If not, then you can soak then in a sink full of soapy water. (most baskets are okay to do this), rinse well and dry. Sit out side in the sun or you can lightly blow them dry.

I recently purchased some baskets that were very dusty and dirty (very cheap) what have you found to be the best way to clean them
